Brazen Jewel Robbery at Brussels Airport Nets $50 Million in Diamonds

BRUSSELS — They arrived at Brussels Airport armed with automatic weapons and dressed in police uniforms aboard two vehicles equipped with blue police lights. But their most important weapon was information: the eight hooded gangsters who on Monday evening seized diamonds worth tens of millions of dollars from a passenger plane preparing to depart for Switzerland knew exactly when to strike — just 18 minutes before takeoff.
Forcing their way through the airport’s perimeter fence, the thieves raced, police lights flashing, to Flight LX789, which had just been loaded with diamonds from a Brink’s armored van from Antwerp, Belgium, and was getting ready for an 8:05 p.m. departure for Zurich.
“There is a gap of only a few minutes” between the loading of valuable cargo and the moment the plane starts to move, said Caroline De Wolf, a spokeswoman for the Antwerp World Diamond Centre, an industry body that promotes the diamond business in Belgium. “The people who did this knew there was going to be this gap and when.”
They also knew they had to move swiftly in a secure airport zone swarming with police officers and security guards. Waving guns that the Brussels prosecutors’ office described as “like Kalashnikovs,” they calmly ordered ground staff workers and the pilot, who was outside the plane making a final inspection, to back off and began unloading scores of gem-filled packets from the cargo hold. Without firing a shot, they then sped away into the night with a booty that the Antwerp Diamond Centre said was worth around $50 million but which some Belgian news media reported as worth much more.
The thieves’ only error: they got away with 120 packets of diamonds but left some gems behind in their rush.
“They were very, very professional,” said the Brussels prosecutor Ine Van Wymersch, who said the whole operation lasted barely five minutes. The police, she added, are now examining whether the thieves had inside information. “This is an obvious possibility,” she said.
Passengers, already on board the plane awaiting takeoff, had no idea anything was amiss until they were told to debark because their Zurich-bound flight, operated by Helvetic Airways, had been canceled.
“I am certain this was an inside job,” said Doron Levy, an expert in airport security at a French risk management company, Ofek. The theft, he added, was “incredibly audacious and well organized,” and beyond the means of all but the most experienced and strong-nerved criminals. “In big jobs like this we are often surprised by the level of preparation and information: they know so much they probably know the employees by name.”
He said the audacity of the crime recalled in some ways the so-called Pink Panther robberies, a long series of brazen raids on high-end jewelers in Geneva, London and elsewhere attributed to criminal gangs from the Balkans. But he said the military precision of Monday’s diamond robbery and the targeting of an airport suggested a far higher level of organization than the cruder Pink Panther operations.

The police have yet to make any arrests related to the airport robbery, said the prosecutor, but have found a burned-out white van that they believe may have been used by the robbers. It was found near the airport late on Monday.
Scrambling to crack a crime that has delivered an embarrassing blow to the reputation of Brussels Airport and Antwerp’s diamond industry, the Belgian police are now looking into possible links with earlier robberies at the same airport. The airport, which handles nearly daily deliveries of diamonds to and from Antwerp, the world’s leading diamond trading center, has been targeted on three previous occasions since the mid-1990s by thieves using similar methods to seize gems and other valuables. Most of the culprits in those robberies have been caught.
Jan Van Der Cruysse, a spokesman for the airport, insisted that security was entirely up to international standards, but “what we face is organized crime with methods and means not addressed in aviation security measures as we know them today.” Precautions intended to combat would-be bombers and other threats, he added, could not prevent commando-style raids by heavily armed criminals. “This involves much more than an aviation security problem.”
The robbery also signaled how vulnerable sprawling airport complexes can still be despite a steady tightening of security measures since the attacks in the United States on Sept. 11, 2001. Most of these have been aimed at screening passengers inside the terminal buildings, not at securing the tarmac outside.

“This will give everyone a cold shower, everyone from the Homeland Security Department in the U.S. to the airline transport industry and insurance companies worldwide,” said John Shaw of SW Associates, a risk management company in Paris. “You have to rethink the whole game — how to approach security on a large static target like an airport.”
The robbery has also rattled Antwerp’s diamond industry at a time when the city, a diamond trading and cutting hub for centuries, is struggling to fend off a challenge from low-wage diamond cutters in India and elsewhere.
“The fact that this happened is a big problem for us. We have our No. 1 position to defend. Security is obviously very important,” said Ms. De Wolf of the Antwerp World Diamond Centre. “We are shocked by the fact this could ever happen. We are all wondering, ‘How is this possible?’ ”
Diamonds traded in Antwerp last year, she said, had a total value of $51.9 billion, accounting for 80 percent of the world’s rough diamond trade and 50 percent of trade in polished gems. Ms. De Wolf said Monday’s robbery was the biggest she could recall.
Helvetic Airways, an independent Swiss airline that operated the plane hit by the robbery, said security for valuable cargo is normally the responsibility of the airport and the security company hired to transport valuable cargo to the plane. The airline’s spokesman in Zurich declined to comment further.
Diamonds bought in Antwerp for either cutting or sale abroad are usually taken to Brussels Airport, about 25 miles away, under police escort in armored security vans hired from Brinks and other companies. “We take security very seriously,” Ms. De Wolf said. “We are all in shock.”

What it takes being a Khan? SRK pours his heart out

New Delhi, Jan 22 (IANS): Superstar Shah Rukh Khan bares it all on what it means to be a Muslim in the Post-9/11 world and how he became an "inadvertent object of political leaders" in first person account for Outlook Turning Points magazine, published in association with The New York Times newspaper. He also features on the cover of the publication.
Titled "Being a Khan", the write-up appears in the current issue of the magazine and the 47-year-old actor, one of the few Indian actors with international recognition, writes: "I sometimes become the inadvertent object of political leaders who choose to make me a symbol of all that they think is wrong and unpatriotic about Muslims in India."
"There have been occasions when I have been accused of bearing allegiance to our neighbouring nation rather than my own country - this even though I am an Indian, whose father fought for the freedom of India. Rallies have been held where leaders have exhorted me to leave and return what they refer to my original homeland," added the superstar of Hindi cinema.
SRK is married to Gauri, a Hindu, and has two children - Aryan and Suhana.
"I gave my son and daughter names that could pass for generic (pan-India and pan-religious) ones - Aryan and Suhana. The Khan has been bequeathed by me so they can't really escape it."
"I pronounce it with my epiglottis when asked by Muslims and throw the Aryan as evidence of their race when non-Muslims enquire. I imagine this will prevent my offspring from receiving unwarranted eviction orders or random fatwas in the future," he wrote.
He said he became so sick of being mistaken for some crazed terrorist, "who co-incidentally carries the same name as mine that I made a film subtly titled 'My Name Is Khan' (and I am not a terrorist) to prove a point."
Set in the post 9/11 US, "My Name Is Khan" focuses on religious and national identitaies through Rizwan (SRK), who has Asperger's Syndrome, and how his Khan identity becomes all important in a suspicious America.
"Ironically, I was interrogated at the airport for hours about my last name when I was going to promote the film in America for the first time," said SRK.

Muzhappilangad: drive-in spot

There is only one drive-in beach in Kerala. That credit goes to Muzhappilangad, Kannur. A dream beach, one kilometer away from N.H.17 towards west between Thalasseri and Kannur - as if Muzhappilagad Panchayath has been adorned with an anklet by the Arabian Sea.

Beach is seven kilometer long and about 100 meter wide. During the low tide when the sea recedes, the width will increase to more than 200 meters. Since the shore is curved like a semicircle, from one end, the other end of the beach can be seen. Giving a green border to the beach pine trees stand majestically along the shore. Beyond the pine trees under the shadows of the palm grove, foreign tourists sipping sweet toddy. Waves that slowly hug the shore seems to be having the modesty of a shy girl. In the eastern sea the Dharmadam islet is full of palm trees and creepers. Of course the surf filled Muzhappilangad beach is a beauty. More than a drive-in beach, Muzhappilangad seashore is a good place for unloading your tensions.

A Little Journey
To reach Muzhappilangad you have to travel 65 Kilometers from Thaliparamba. Covering this distance in a goods auto to reach Muzhappilangad on Sundays is a cheap affair. The auto driver Sayid of KL 13-N-1743 'Barakkath', has only one thing to say. The happiness of driving in the beach, it is a different experience. To share the happiness of beach driving, his friends Ubaid and Shafiq come regularly here along with Sayid.

When the trendy vehicles like Santro, Tavera, Sumo, Innova and the roaring country Jeeps make the evenings at Muzhappilangad beach thrilling, Sayid drives his auto here and there like a buzzing beetle among them. Muzhipilangad beach- where there is no distinction of status.

Sundays. The day that everybody come to Muzhappilangad. Air hostess student Sariga, 1 st year B.A. Psychology student Neetulal, 9th standard student Nikhila- all of them have come here to taste the excitement of Muzhappilangad beach. The P.G. students of Kannur University Campus, Biju, Devesh and Binith also have come here to know about the drive-in beach. Chatting with the sweet waves that comes to the shore, splashing water, and making their footprints on the white sand, they communicated with the beach. A short rest at the Beach Pavilion, which is the beach guesthouse. The tourists at the guest house are received with tender coconuts. They are given tender coconut as welcome drink. That too cut in front of them. That is the routine of the beach.

The foot tickling waves invited them for a journey. But, who will take them? Shaji the Beach Pavilion manager dialed the number 9895992071. Here comes Sathar Muzhappilangad with a beaming face, in his engine powered big boat. Sathar is ready for the sea journey arranged by D.T.P.C. approved travel agencies. He reminded them about the preparations for the sea journey. At the skill of Sathar the boat shot ahead parting the waves. The shore slowly went backwards. With the rise and fall of the waves, the boat rocked slowly like a cradle. When the sea, which they have seen only from the shore till then, came closer clouds of a slight fear appeared on the faces of the playful tourists. Don't be upset. Sathar gave them courage. Sathar is not a simple guy. He has appeared in about five movies. In the movie Balram versus Taradas he was the man who drove the speedboat in the sea as Mammotty's dupe, he said with a little pride. You can see Sathar here and there in the movies Rakshakan and Black. Whenever a rescue operation is needed in the sea, Sathar is ready.

Away from the seashore dolphins received the new guests. One or two of them came near the boat and lifted their head to look in. They seem to think... oh, is that you... and again went under water. Muzhappilangad beach is also the dolphin's drive-in beach. In the boat journey between Muzhappilangad beach and Dharmadam islet, dolphins are regularly seen. If the journey is in the early morning, many dolphins appear immediately after you leave the shore. Usually dolphins come to the shore when the wind is still.

Some times a mischievous wind called 'kachan kaatu' comes to Muzhappilangad. This wind even lifts the sand. The arrival of kachan wind is usually in the month of Makaram of Malayam calender. It lifts sand from one side of the parked vehicles and put it on the other side. There will be a pit where the vehicle was parked. This Kachana Kaatu is one of the mysteries of this shore.
When the boat left the shore the roaring of the waves stopped. The swinging of the boat became rhythmic. Behind, kilometers away the shore. Infinite sea ahead. Wriggling and shooting fishes. Burning sunlight. Everyone wore hats, except Sathar.

By the time they return, first class meals will be ready in the Beach Pavilion. Rest for a while. Then again back to the shore. Otherwise you will be missing the rare beautiful sun set.

The evenings of Muzhappilangad are a rare view you can get in the Indian shores. Vast shore, widespread sea, sparkling waves that kiss your feet and pass by. Birds that fly after the little creatures when the waves return after hugging the shore, and again when the waves come back, they too fly back. Really enjoyable view. In the evening the shore became crowded. Mostly families with their children. Rows of vehicles, motorbikes and children with cycles. Children are interested in getting into the quiet seawater. They really enjoy. Most of them are taking photos of the red color of the sun set.

Rocks that become covered by the blanket of darkness, when the sun dip in to the sea. The water birds disappearing into the pine trees and rain forests.

Once more, no, many more times, we should come to this beautiful shore.

Sariga and her friends returned after reinforcing their friendship once again.

Come, With family

Muzhappilangad shore is like a carpet spread on wet sand. Since the waves keeps on caressing the slightly slanding shore, the sand looks like polished. It never goes down even if you stamp hard. This makes Muzhappilangad favorite for the vehicles. During the low tide, the width of the shore increases, its beauty too. Usually the cars go very slow on the shore that looks likes an eight-track road. Some young boys on the bikes sometimes fly past.

There is police assistance to look in to the safety of the families who comes to spend the evening. When you come to see the shore, the waves seem to call you. The waves that seek the quiet shore. The children will run after the milky surfing waves. Since the sea is very shallow, you can get into it confidently. The elders cannot be as good as the children in those water games. Even then they also will go to feel the touch of waves.

Some native women are digging something from the sand of the shore. They are catching 'Orikka' when they pop their head out of the sand. Orikka' is a cousin of Kallummakkaya' (Mussels). Some of the tourists also filled the available bags with 'Orikka'. The favourite food of the foreign tourists who come to see the shore. The Parasailing organised by the 31 N.C.C battalion reveals another face of the Muzhappilangad beach. The view of the cadets flying under the big cloth umbrella, which flies high with the wind, doubled the enthusiasm of the viewers.

Children looked at their parent's faces, eager to fly. The Adventure academy used to give chances for this type of flying to the public also.

A team from Alappuzha heading to Mukambika reached muzhappilangad. Several times they hesitated. Their doubt was whether the vehicle would ditch in to the sand. After asking several people, eventually they drove in. Muzhappilangad beach is for family and children. To build sand castles and to run along with the waves, come to this place. You can be a witness to the most beautiful evening in Kerala.

There are some other beautiful beaches also in Kannur. Payyambalam, Eazhimala, Meenkunnu, Overbarries Folly and so many other beaches, which tempt the tourists. These beaches are the colourful dreams of the development of tourism in Kannur. Peaceful resting beaches for the tourists too.

FIFA Ballon d’Or: Who voted for whom

Lionel Messi has won his fourth Ballon d’Or title, winning the prestigious award over runner-up Cristiano Ronaldo and third-place team-mate Andres Iniesta.
According to the list of votes published by FIFA, out of 483 captains, coaches and journalists who voted in the Ballon d’Or ceremony, 45 left out Lionel Messi, who won the award for the fourth consecutive year, from their top three players in the world.
The voting list reveals some decisions that would raise a few eyebrows, but there are some that can be considered as particularly surprising.
Here are our favorites -
Spain -
Spanish captain Iker Casillas has voted Sergio Ramos for the first place, Ronaldo for the 2nd and Xavi for 3rd.
Surprisingly, Casillas’ La Liga rival Lionel Messi was deemed not good enough for his liking.
Argentina -
Lionel Messi, who had no room for Cristiano Ronaldo, used his votes on Barcelona team mates Andres Iniesta (1st), Xavi (2nd) and Argentinian team mate Sergio Aguero (3rd).
England -
Captain  Steven Gerrard voted for Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Xabi Alonso in that order.
India -
Meanwhile, Indian Football Team Captain, Sunil Chhetri and the Coach Wim Koevermans picked Andres Iniesta for the first place followed by Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.
France -
Somewhat staggeringly, French Captain, Hugo Lloris omitted all the three favorites for the award by voting for CasillasFalcao and Drogba in that order.
Germany -
German Captain Philipp Lahm backed Iniesta over Messi and Ronaldo.
Sweden -
Swedish captain Zlatan Ibrahimovic picked Xavi for the first place, Andrea Pirlo for 2nd and Messi for the 3rd position while Swedish coach Erik Hamren voted for Swedish captain Zlatan Ibrahimovich as number one, and had no room for Messi.
Netherlands -
Wesley Sneijder’s favorite for the award was team mate Robin van Persie, followed by Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.
Italy -
Pirlo was picked for the first place by Italian captain Buffon, followed by Messi and Ronaldo.
And the ones that caught our eye were -
The Coach of Thailand, Winfried Schaefer, voted for Sergio Busquets as the best player in the World.
Mario Balotelli got his one vote from Fahed Attal, the captain of the Palestine team (who placed him 3rd).
The Captain of Algeria, Madjid Bougherra, voted for Karim Benzema as the best player in the world.
The captain of Lithuania, Tomas Danilevicius, voted for Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Wayne Rooney, Gerard Pique, in that order.
The captain of South Africa, Bongani Khumalo, voted for Yaya Toure,  Xavi and Andres Iniesta.
The media from US Virgin Islands, Kyrgystan, Burma and Barbados did not cast their votes.

Gangrape of paramedic well-planned, police says in chargesheet

New Delhi: Several charges, including that of murder which carries death penalty, were Thursday filed against all the five adult accused in the gangrape case in which a 23-year-old Delhi girl lost her life, prompting nationwide protests recently.

The five, including the driver of the bus in which the gangrape took place on December 16, were charged with murder, gangrape, attempt to murder, kidnapping, unnatural offences, dacoity, hurting in committing robbery, destruction of evidence, criminal conspiracy and common intention under the Indian Penal Code.

The case of the sixth accused, a juvenile, will be filed before the Juvenile Justice Board.

In the 33-page charge sheet with annexures running into several hundred pages, was filed before Metropolitan Magistrate Surya Malik Grover with the prosecution urging the court to keep the document in a sealed cover to protect the identity of the victim and that the proceedings be held in-camera.

The court has posted the matter for hearing on January 5 before the area magistrate who is expected to commit it to sessions for trial.

The prosecution alleged that the crime was executed in a "well-planned" manner.

"We have invoked section 120-B as all the six accused have committed the crime in a well-planned manner," public prosecutor Rajiv Mohan told reporters.

"Each one of them has a specific role in the commission of the offence. So they are equally liable for the crime. We have sufficient evidence against all the accused including the juvenile offender," he said.

Mohan said the DNA report has established the involvement of all the accused in the crime.

The five accused are Ram Singh, his brother Mukesh and their accomplices Pawan Gupta, Vinay Sharma and Akshay Thakur.

The role of the juvenile offender is also elaborated in assaulted in the bus, the charge sheet names around 40 people as witnesses to support its case against the five accused.

The accused have also been charged with attempt to kill the male friend in the bus, whose owner has also been arrested and remanded to police custody by a Tis Hazari court Thursday.

Police also told the court it would also place before it the charge sheet in electronic form and sought more time for the same saying the annexures to the charge sheet are bulky.

It sought more time for filing the e-charge sheet and was allowed to do so by January 5.

As the charge sheet was filed, some lawyers and public shouted slogans in the court demanding that the accused be handed over to public. They need not be tried as it is evident that they are the culprits, they contended.

They were, however, hushed up by fellow lawyers, who requested the judge to appoint a "spokesperson" who can during the trial of the case inform one and all about the daily developments as the matter has touched public sentiments.

The judge asked them to put their views before the area magistrate concerned on the next date of hearing.

Before the filing of the charge sheet, women lawyers protested in the court complex demanding swift justice and strict action against the perpetrators of such crimes.

The male friend's maternal uncle, who is also an advocate, told reporters that he would keep a tab on daily proceedings and if the police fails to take up the case properly during the trial, he would move the high court for redressal.

He also said he would also move the high court requesting "for treating the juvenile at par with the other co-accused."

The filing of the charge sheet in the jam-packed court did not go without drama. Before the proceedings, the courtroom was locked from inside and was opened only after the lawyers protested.

The charge sheet was filed at 17.30 hours, 30 minutes after the normal court hours.

This prompted the judge to ask the public prosecutor for the reason behind filing the charge sheet at the late hour.

Mohan said the investigators took time to put bulky documents along with the charge sheet in an orderly manner.

Later, he told reporters that the charge sheet would be filed against the juvenile offender shortly and the documentation work for that is less taxing than that in the case of the other accused.

He also said as per the law the court will also hold an inquiry to ascertain the age of the juvenile.

A woman advocate, who is empanelled with the Delhi Legal Services Authority (DLSA), said in any case the accused would be provided with legal aid.

NASA explains about the End of the World

Dec. 21, 2012, won't be the end of the world as we know, however, it will be another winter solstice.

Contrary to some of the common beliefs out there, the claims behind the end of the world quickly unravel when pinned down to the 2012 timeline.

Below, NASA Scientists answer questions on the following 2012 topics:

  • End of the World
  • 'Prediction' Origins
  • Mayan Calendar
  • Total Blackout
  • Planetary Alignment
  • Nibiru/Planet X/Eris
  • Polar Shift
  • Meteor Strike
  • NASA Science
  • Solar Storms

(Q): Are there any threats to the Earth in 2012? Many Internet websites say the world will end in December 2012.
Answer (A):The world will not end in 2012. Our planet has been getting along just fine for more than 4 billion years, and credible scientists worldwide know of no threat associated with 2012.

Q: What is the origin of the prediction that the world will end in 2012?
A: The story started with claims that Nibiru, a supposed planet discovered by the Sumerians, is headed toward Earth. This catastrophe was initially predicted for May 2003, but when nothing happened the doomsday date was moved forward to December 2012 and linked to the end of one of the cycles in the ancient Mayan calendar at the winter solstice in 2012 -- hence the predicted doomsday date of December 21, 2012.

Q: Does the Mayan calendar end in December 2012?
A: Just as the calendar you have on your kitchen wall does not cease to exist after December 31, the Mayan calendar does not cease to exist on December 21, 2012. This date is the end of the Mayan long-count period but then -- just as your calendar begins again on January 1 -- another long-count period begins for the Mayan calendar.

Q: Is NASA predicting a "total blackout" of Earth on Dec. 23 to Dec. 25?
A: Absolutely not. Neither NASA nor any other scientific organization is predicting such a blackout. The false reports on this issue claim that some sort of "alignment of the Universe" will cause a blackout. There is no such alignment (see next question). Some versions of this rumor cite an emergency preparedness message from NASA Administrator Charles Bolden. This is simply a message encouraging people to be prepared for emergencies, recorded as part of a wider government preparedness campaign. It never mentions a blackout.

Q: Could planets align in a way that impacts Earth?
A: There are no planetary alignments in the next few decades and even if these alignments were to occur, their effects on the Earth would be negligible. One major alignment occurred in 1962, for example, and two others happened during 1982 and 2000. Each December the Earth and sun align with the approximate center of the Milky Way Galaxy but that is an annual event of no consequence.
› More about alignment

Q: Is there a planet or brown dwarf called Nibiru or Planet X or Eris that is approaching the Earth and threatening our planet with widespread destruction?
A: Nibiru and other stories about wayward planets are an Internet hoax. There is no factual basis for these claims. If Nibiru or Planet X were real and headed for an encounter with the Earth in 2012, astronomers would have been tracking it for at least the past decade, and it would be visible by now to the naked eye. Obviously, it does not exist. Eris is real, but it is a dwarf planet similar to Pluto that will remain in the outer solar system; the closest it can come to Earth is about 4 billion miles.

Q: What is the polar shift theory? Is it true that the Earth's crust does a 180-degree rotation around the core in a matter of days if not hours?
A: A reversal in the rotation of Earth is impossible. There are slow movements of the continents (for example Antarctica was near the equator hundreds of millions of years ago), but that is irrelevant to claims of reversal of the rotational poles. However, many of the disaster websites pull a bait-and-switch to fool people. They claim a relationship between the rotation and the magnetic polarity of Earth, which does change irregularly, with a magnetic reversal taking place every 400,000 years on average. As far as we know, such a magnetic reversal doesn’t cause any harm to life on Earth. Scientists believe a magnetic reversal is very unlikely to happen in the next few millennia.
› More about polar shift

Q: Is the Earth in danger of being hit by a meteor in 2012?
A: The Earth has always been subject to impacts by comets and asteroids, although big hits are very rare. The last big impact was 65 million years ago, and that led to the extinction of the dinosaurs. Today NASA astronomers are carrying out a survey called the Spaceguard Survey to find any large near-Earth asteroids long before they hit. We have already determined that there are no threatening asteroids as large as the one that killed the dinosaurs. All this work is done openly with the discoveries posted every day on the NASA Near-Earth Object Program Office website, so you can see for yourself that nothing is predicted to hit in 2012.

Q: How do NASA scientists feel about claims of the world ending in 2012?
A: For any claims of disaster or dramatic changes in 2012, where is the science? Where is the evidence? There is none, and for all the fictional assertions, whether they are made in books, movies, documentaries or over the Internet, we cannot change that simple fact. There is no credible evidence for any of the assertions made in support of unusual events taking place in December 2012.
› Why you need not fear a supernova
› About super volcanoes

Q: Is there a danger from giant solar storms predicted for 2012?
A: Solar activity has a regular cycle, with peaks approximately every 11 years. Near these activity peaks, solar flares can cause some interruption of satellite communications, although engineers are learning how to build electronics that are protected against most solar storms. But there is no special risk associated with 2012. The next solar maximum will occur in the 2012-2014 time frame and is predicted to be an average solar cycle, no different than previous cycles throughout history.› Video: Solar Storms› More about solar storms.
